Hi, i just registered moments ago. First of all let me say how glad i am to see that HotU is on its way back. I missed the page and was sad when i heard the rumors that it will cease to exist. It always was my number one source for walking down memory lane, reading the reviews and sometimes download one game or another.
Are you still in need of server space for file hosting and if so how much? |

In a long run we will find some good servers, but for now there is a need for something QUICK, no matter how crappy the server would be |

What would help if you could have one log-in and be able to travel between forum and game site.
Currently, once I log-in, from the forum or the main gamesite page, I get to come here. But I have no way back. So to go back to the main page, I have to have another tab open, etc and go back that way. _________________ Retro PC gaming - it's the future! |

I see. Im willing to offer you 500MB. It is for testing to see how fast it really is. What i can promise you is that there is no traffic limit. If it works out and its fast enough i would consider to offer you 5 to 10GB.
Please send me a p.m. and we can discuss all the details there. |

Hi,
I've got about 4 gigs of space with "unlimited" traffic bandwidth account in a hosting company, that I can contribute.
Cheers,

1. i work as a freelance graphic designer so it would be no problem for me to change some things, mind you i would prefer for the site to stay true to its looks instead of changing to a slick flashy/shiny feel like vimeo or something (i appreciate that it looks natural on a pentium II).
2. plus, could someone post info on:
2a. how many MB do the site files take (excluding actual game downloads)
2b. how many MB do the game files have
2c. what is the approximate bandwidth/transfer limit that we need in order to have it fully functional (maybe ask the last admin, anyone?)
2d. does anyone know of a fairly priced webhost, and how much it would cost monthly?
3. im very happy the reconstruction is underway. to me its a matter of saving something like childhood memories, and im ready to put some work/time/resources into it.
4. thanks! |

Since the bandwidth seems to be scarce, why not look into a bittorrent solution?
That way you'll get more out of less serverspace/bandwidth. |

Anyway, I think it's good to have two Home of the Underdogs (the disappearance of the original one shows why); that makes it more likely that one will survive in the long term. Probably.
The fact that they seem to look and work pretty differently also means they're a bit less redundant with each other. |

then I totally lost contact, but sometimes followed the decline of HOTU.
Again - good to see this site up again.
btw, is underdogs still involved in this site (saw her signiture at the "news" section)
best wishes
boromir
Of course - if you need people to check links or upload games - please contact me! I would be glad to help you to rebuild this site! |

I disagree, I finding it worrying how many 'Underdog' sites there are! The customer base will be divided and that could be one big group would be enough for a site, but three small groups may not be enough for any of them!
I prefer the original layout so this is my main site for coming to, but I know the 'other' HotU site is doing more 'marketing' and is linked on more other sites. _________________ Retro PC gaming - it's the future! |

I really like that hotu is getting a revive.
First, the 'me talking part'. Here's some random thoughts:
* Downloads are not the most important thing imho, they can be easily found all over the internet actually. The reviews, the screenshots, the content is what is most important and what kept me coming back to hotu. I could always browse the site and find another nice gem that i havent played. The site always had quality and it would be good to focus on that - providing a quality site that extensively cataloges oldies.
* On the above topic - one of the things that bothered me the most about hotu was poor quantity and quality of screenshots. This would be a great place to expand upon - more high res screenshots of games.
* The look of the site - the 'competition' has bastardized the hotu look, making a site thats unbearable to look at. It's unreadable, cluttered and feels like its powered by phpnuke or some such. The current look, while it lacks certain things is clean and elegant. Im not saying keep it - im asking that you try too keep the spirit, a simple, elegant and readable look.
* One idea i really liked (which never got realised) was to convert hotu to a wiki-like site. Meaning everyone could contribute easily. This idea has a lot of potential, is very flexible and would hopefully enable the site to grow. Again a lot of work would be required to oversee the site, but that could be dealt with in many ways depending on the response.
Now the 'me doing' part:
* I can offer some space and bandwidth - but not for game downloads (the reasons are probably self-explanatory). Other stuff that sucks bandwidth is ok - images are one common thing for example.
* I can help with writing php code, or the actual content (reviews, screenshots etc).
If youre interested - drop me an email |
